Any listing in this product directory or other related materials, where “NRTL” appears next to the product name was tested by ARL as a NRTL. The NRTL status for these listed products was valid through January 27th, 2008 unless previously delisted. NRTL labels issued on or before January 27th, 2008 for these products remain valid indefinitely. These products may remain listed solely by ARL. However, they are no longer under the surveillance of the NRTL program.
MEDICAL AND DENTAL EQUIPMENT
The products listed here are electric medical and dental equipment and accessories intended for professional use by personnel in hospitals, nursing homes, medical care centers, medical and dental offices and similar health care facilities, including apparatus intended to be used with oxygen administering equipment. The listings also cover refrigerated medical and dental equipment, such as thermia and oxygen therapy devices, which employ hermetic motor compressors and air or water cooled condensers. The equipment covered is for use on interior wiring systems in accordance with the National Electrical Code.
Requirements for this category cover portable (cord connected) equipment rated at 300 volts or less and permanently connected equipment rated at 600 volts or less. In addition, the requirements include equipment batteries, and battery operated products that are energized by a battery supply having a voltage of 300 volts DC or less, or battery power and provisions for connection to branch circuits rated 300 volts or less in accordance with the National Electrical Code.
The investigated products take into consideration the hazards resulting from the presence of oxygen and the intended use of oxygen administering equipment, but do not cover the canopy (tent) or oxygen storage and distribution systems with which the equipment may be used.
The requirements for this category do not cover electrically heated pads, X-ray equipment, hospital food warming cabinets and carts, nurse call and intercommunication equipment, isolated power systems, equipment for use in hazardous locations (with respect to flammable anesthetics), nor other equipment or appliances that are covered by separate, individual requirements.
Exigencies for this category of products do not consider the complete spectrum of physiological or therapeutic effects, beneficial or otherwise, except where generally accepted limits for potentially hazardous conditions are defined. Devices which necessitate the utilization of conditions exceeding such accepted limits for patient treatment are intended for use by or under the supervision of licensed medical persons. Such equipment is provided with appropriate warnings prominently displayed on the device.
Each product is marked with the name or trademark of the (manufacturer) or vendor, a distinctive style, type, catalog or model designation, date code, electrical ratings (including primary and secondary voltages), electrical hazard warnings and other cautionary and hazard warnings as applicable. Refrigerated products are additionally marked with the kind and amount of refrigerant employed and factory test pressures for suction and discharge sides.
These products comply with ARL requirements which include pertinent sections of the Standards for Safety, ANSI/UL 416, Refrigerated Medical Equipment, and/or UL 544, Medical and Dental Equipment.
A product that contains features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems new or different from those covered by the requirements of the standard, and that involve a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons, have been evaluated using the appropriate additional component and end-product requirements as determined necessary to maintain the acceptable level of safety as originally anticipated by the intent of the standard. A product whose features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems conflict with specific provisions of the standard have been judged to be in non-compliance with the standard.
