Any listing in this product directory or other related materials, where “NRTL” appears next to the product name was tested by ARL as a NRTL. The NRTL status for these listed products was valid through January 27th, 2008 unless previously delisted. NRTL labels issued on or before January 27th, 2008 for these products remain valid indefinitely. These products may remain listed solely by ARL. However, they are no longer under the surveillance of the NRTL program.
HIGH INTENSITY DISCHARGE LIGHTING FIXTURES AND LAMP BALLASTS
The products listed here are general use high intensity discharge (HID) electric lighting fixtures for commercial, industrial or residential use in ordinary locations in accordance with the National Electrical Code, ANSI/NFPA 70. The listings include mercury vapor, metal halide, high pressure sodium and low pressure sodium lamp types, all intended to be operated by a ballast.
In addition, the listings include indoor and outdoor ballasts, including starting circuits for the operation of high intensity discharge lamps, and associated equipment, in accordance with the National Electrical Code, from an alternating current power supply with nominal input ratings of 600 volts rms or less. An open core and coil ballast is acceptable only for use when in a lighting fixture, sign, or other enclosure acceptable for its intended application.
The requirements for this category of products do not include: (1) Fixtures for installation aboard a ship or boat, (2) fixtures for underwater installation, (3) fixtures for use in hazardous locations, (4) portable lamps, (5) portable electric hand lamps, stage and studio lights, medical and dental lights, and the like, (6) fixtures intended for use with self-ballasted HID lamps, (7) emergency lighting fixtures, or fixtures with integral batteries, (8) fixtures provided with adapters or other forms of construction to enable them to be mounted on or supported by any other fixture, lampholder, or receptacle, (9) fixtures intended for field mounting to furniture as part of a cord connected task lighting assembly, (10) lighting units having flashing characteristics, words or symbols designed to convey information or attract attention (exclusive of exit lighting), or (11) ballasts consisting of resistance only.
A fixture provided with lampholders for both incandescent and high intensity discharge lamps (combination fixture) complies with the requirements of this category and with the Standard for Incandescent Lighting Fixtures, ANSI/UL 1571, insofar as they apply to construction, test methods, and marking requirements unique to incandescent lamps.
A fixture provided with lampholders for both fluorescent and high intensity discharge lamps (combination fixture) complies with the requirements for this category and with the Standard for Fluorescent Lighting Fixtures, ANSI/UL 1570, insofar as they apply to construction, test methods, and marking requirements unique to fluorescent lighting fixtures.
Each product is marked with the name or trademark of the (manufacturer) or vendor, a distinctive style, type, catalog or model designation, date code, electrical ratings, wiring diagram, electrical hazard warnings, lamp type and maximum lamp wattage.
These products comply with ARL requirements which include pertinent sections of the Standards for Safety, ANSI/UL 1029, High Intensity Discharge Lamp Ballasts; and/or ANSI/UL 1572, High Intensity Discharge Lighting Fixtures.
A product that contains features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems new or different from those covered by the requirements of the standard, and that involve a risk of fire, electric shock, or injury to persons, have been evaluated using the appropriate additional component and end-product requirements as determined necessary to maintain the acceptable level of safety as originally anticipated by the intent of the standard. A product whose features, characteristics, components, materials, or systems conflict with specific provisions of the standard have been judged to be in non-compliance with the standard.
Only products which properly bear the ARL Listing Mark (Label) are considered Listed by ARL.
